DENNIS – An aquaculture company wants to power its shellfish hatchery near Chapin Memorial Beach the old-fashioned way, by harnessing the wind.
But whether a wind turbine that reaches 242 feet at the height of its top blade can be considered historic is the question that Dennis officials will address this month, reports the Cape Cod Times.
A proposal by the Aquacultural Research Corp. to install a single-turbine, 600-kilowatt Elecon facility on its 39 acres of beachfront property goes before the Old King’s Highway Regional Historic District Committee of Dennis Aug. 11.
The wind turbine would drastically reduce energy costs at the hatchery, which is the largest on the East Coast and supplies clam and oyster seeds across the Cape and beyond, said Gail Hart, ARC vice president.
